Nop, in this case the Item for taming the Gryphon cannot be broken on the attempt to tame.

But it can scape  , but you still got the item. The messages that can appear on the attempts are the next:

Failed: The gryphon flew off.
Failed: The gryphon rejects your gift.
Succeeded: The gryphon will now accompany you as a friend and ally.

This item can be assembled from its four pieces:

•  Golden Bijou
•  Sunray Emblem
