If a one-handed melee weapon has the same def value of a shield, is there any benefit at all of picking the shield with the weapon?

Had this question while I was leveling up in Dawnport. If for example, a Longsword (wiht def 14) has the same value of a Wooden Shield (def 14), what would be the advantage of getting the shield instead of going just with the weapon and saving cap? What matters here on this situation?

I want to make sure I understand before I answer - Do you mean why would you have both the shield and sword when you could save cap and just get one if they both have same defense?

If I read it correctly its because the question says instead in it which makes me think one or the other and then in your details it says instead of just the weapon which makes me think more than 1 so I'm still a little confused but you can use this as a question and alter it if needbe:)  because this question is definitely out of my expertise hahahah "If I have a sword and I looted a shield with the same defense what is the advantage of using the shield?

The most important advantage of using a shield with a one-handed weapon is that you can only advance in shielding while wearing a shield (or a spellbook). If you only have a sword or another weapon equipped, your shielding skill will not grow up, even if you successfully block hits.

Also note that you need a shield to increase your shielding skill. Using a weapon without a shield won't work, unless you are using a training statue.

Shields are also often not that expensive, offer additional boosts (to the shielding skill, to physical/elemental protection, etc.), and have room for imbuements specific to shields that you cannot apply to weapons.

Yes is the same as no using shield, you can save cap using a weapon with high defense stat, but at higher lvls shields give some other attributes like Phys/elemental defenses (like an ornate shield and gnome shield)
