Does staying diagonal while fighting creatures reduce the damage taken?

Is it true that staying diagonal while fighting creatures reduce the damage taken?
If it's true, how much does it reduce it?

As far as I know it doesn't reduce the damage of the hits, but you avoid the frontal hits which are usually strong in most creatures.
