Blood Rage has multiple effects:

• Removes the effects of the "Protector" spell.
• Increases your base melee skills by 35%.
• Neglects the effects of your shield (blocking damage).
• Increases damage taken by 15%.

So is it affecting your defense on two ways, but the most important is the 15% increased taken damage that was added in the vocation rebalance (you can see the release notes here).

Your offensive power is augmented by whatever the +35% bonus skills gives you. This would put a knight with base skill 100 up to 135 base skill for the duration of the spell.
