When should knights use energy rings?

So now, the item energy ring is an item restricted to Knights and Paladins. I wonder when exactly it is an advantage for a knight to consume his mana as hitpoints... When using an energy ring is better than just keep using spells from a knight perspective?

I've seen Knights using Energy Ring in three different cases:

1. (PvE) To prevent defense preys from ticking down while they are active and you need to run through weak mobs.
2. (PvE) As a measure of last resort to withstand creature's damage. This is only possible because very high level Knights have a large mana pool that is usually almost filled. I can't attest to the efficiency of this because there are many other tools Knights usually prefer to use (Might Rings, HP filling dishes, Protector).
3. (PvP) To withstand SD combos in Retro PvP. Since the Knight's major healing in Retro PvP comes from others (i.e. Druids casting Heal Friend), Knights can effectively use Energy Ring to extend their total life pool, making them more resilient to SD combos. Something that also enables this strategy is the fact that anyone distant 1 SQM from the Knight can also use Mana Potions (preferably Ultimates) to replenish his mana points.

The only reasonable situation for a Knight to use Energy Ring is when he has a defense prey active and doesn’t want to waste it on random mobs on the to get to the hunt.

does that work to avoid the use of the defense prey for any vocation? I would never imagine that!

Yes, that's works for any vocation, mage now can't use energy ring anymore but you can use Magic Shield is the same.

Almost never. But if you're gonna find an area of use for it, I would say simply to survive nuke attacks to avoid getting headshotted.

Some examples could be Omrafirs strong beam attack or Gaz'haragoths UE of doom.

On higher lvls, knights manapools consist of thousands of manapoints, which is rarily seen as a resource added to the HP pool which it actually could be.

I think it's much more relevant seeing it as a resource now when strong mana potions has been introduced for knights, but it's still really irrelevant.
