What happens if you fail to clear the respawns of servants from Their Master's Voice world change?

if you can't clear the 20 respawns and have to leave the basement, what can happen? can I go back and continue cleaning until Mad Mage appears? Does the cave return to the same initial phase?

Correct me if I am wrong, please, but it happened to me years ago and as I remember, when everybody leaves the cave and nobody kills the waves, but you killed for example 8 waves before, then whole cave back to it's "1^st stage", you have to clean it again and then you need to kill only 12 waves to trigger Mad Mage spawn.

Yes, I went back to the 1st stage and had to clean the cave all over again and followed the sequence of raids that I cleaned, it happened yesterday with me.
