How to maximize the experience you get by exchanging Midnight Shards in the Lightbearer Event?

The maximum number of Midnight shards  that you can deliver to NPC Lucius  is 40.

This NPC takes all you have in your backpack, but the experience he gives to you in exchange depends of your base level in the moment of the exchange.

So what is the smart way of doing this transaction to maximice the experience you will get?

I think it is better to trade them incrementally, than all (40) at once. At least on low levels. Because the formulae for the experience you get is: Experience = 300 x L (your level), till 200+.
