What determines how many midnight shards we get from each Lightbearer basin?

Now you can get midnight shards from lighting basins. However, what determines how many midnight shards we get? You can apparently get anywhere from 1 to 3 but does it depend on the basin? Do you get a random amount no matter the basin?

Yes, it is completely random, no matter the basin. Every time you light a basin, you will receive 1-3 midnight shards.
