Why won't Pythius the Rotten take my offer?

I'm trying to hunt dragon lords in Fenrock. To get access, I need to talk to Pythius the Rotten and offer him a golden mug, but when I say "golden mug", he says this:

 Pythius The Rotten: THIS IS NOT WORTH BEING PART OF MY TREASURE! BRING ME SOMETHING ELSE.

I'm 100% sure that I have a golden mug in my backpack. Why is it not working?

The reason I'm posting this question is because I ran into this situation myself. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what was wrong, until I looked at my golden mug.

"You see a golden mug of blood."

When you offer your golden mug to Pythius, make sure it's empty first. That will allow you to give it to him and gain access to the Dragon Lord cave.
