What is agony damage?

Since the implementation (or rework) of the Abomination, more creatures are being implemented with a new type of damage called "agony". The term is even used by CipSoft themselves as we could see in the forum posts during the Summer Update 2022 test server.

But what exactly is agony damage? Is there a way to analyse it? What differs it from the other types?

Agony damage shows up in the game window as brown text.

This damage type is not reduced by any defenses, including: armor, defense and elemental resistances

As far as we know now, only bosses have Agony damage types, so prey defenses also do not apply.
