Blocking spawn of non hostile mobs?

I'm trying to get charm points from pigs and sheeps, but they never spawn when I'm around (I like to be a little afk while doing these easy points) Am I blocking the spawn or is it something else that interferes with the spawn rate?

Yes you are blocking their spawn. The best way to do it is using fire bombs at the places where these monsters appear, so you don't have to be close to them and they will spawn normally.

How far away do I need to be? Just out of screen of the spawn? Or maybe 1 floor up/down from the spawn? :)

Yes, both situatins (out of screen or diffenret floor) are enough to the spawn works.
