How does Soul Core work on monsters that yield no experience?

Let's say that I get a Dog Soul Core and use it on the Soulpit, how does the soul core work since Dogs yield no experience?

Is it useless besides counting for the 200 total creatures?

Yes, unfortunately it is "useless". You will not gain any xp. It is only interesting for those who want to unlock 200 Animus Masteries, or for those who want to unlock them all.
