Can you unlock powerful imbuements by using the shrine before killing the boss in the Forgotten Knowledge quest?

The Forgotten Knowledge quest allows players to unlock powerful imbuements. This is done by using the imbuing shrine which is located in rooms with their respective bosses. It's clear that you can use the imbuing shrine and receive powerful imbuements when the boss is killed, but will it also work before killing the boss? In other words, can you jump into the portal, run to the imbuing shrine to get the powerful imbuements, and then leave the room?

By my experience no you can’t, the imbue shrine of the holy portal is outside the boss room and I tried to use it before entering boss room and it didn’t work so I think you need to kill the boss in order to get powerful imbue
